Co-op Fairtrade Merlot

It’s Fairtrade Fortnight until the 13th March and the Co-op (always a champion of Fairtrade products and by far the best Fairtrade wine range on the high street) is offering 15% off their entire Fairtrade range to encourage us to try them. Normally £6.99, this is from a very good producer in Argentina, La Riojana. Merlot can be a bit meh sometimes, but this one’s got lots going on including bright, bramble fruits and a touch of welcome earthiness. Great value – and especially good with a bowl of beef stew and a jacket potato.

  1. I get the bramble fruits, but forget the bright. This wine does truly taste like earth. It hits the middle of your palate with a ‘is it sweet or sour’? With an aftertaste of umm dry over gone blackberry’s ; you know when it gets to autumn and they’re a bit dull. I would recommend trying this after a few pints of tennants super when you really won’t notice how bad it is. Fair trade; just give them the money. I’m sorry but I really couldn’t drink it after a glass. If I didn’t know red wine I’d be put off it for good.

Oh dear John, I am sorry you didn’t like it. Doesn’t sound at all like the one I tried. In fact, sounds so bad I think you might have had a dud bottle. If that happens again, put the cork in and take it back!
